The main idea in this unit is Imperialism. It is when a strong nation takes over a weak nation and controls its politics, economy, and cultural life.
After Industrialism, it caused some small countries to become more powerful, like Britain and Germany. For countries to keep their power, they needed raw materials. European countries took over Africa because they were weak and had natural resources that is useful. Due to the fact that Africa was being used as a place to take resources from, it lead to the Berlin Conference , where European nations discussed how Africa would be split up amongst them for materials. Imperialism, then spread to India by the British. Where the British set up many new, modern technology, or new ways of communication and transportation. shortly after, India went downhill once the British left. Imperialism spread to many parts of Asia as well, causing many issues. Overall, one motivator of Imperialism is Social Darwinism, which is survival of the fittest. |
Skill One The modern World has been shaped from the Imperialism era because without it everyday life wouldn't be the same. For example, if technology and different types of transportation were not spread there would be all kinds of different levels of advancements around the world, plus making our lives easier. Also, it has had a negative effect on some parts of the world like India and its poverty. Once the British left India, it has not been the same, they did not know to to keep the country running like the British. They are a third world country and are very behind on "modern day" technology. Not only that, but they also are scarce on natural resources and health living.

Skill TwoImperialism benefits us because, it has made countries more advanced with technology/ modernization and helped fuel economic growth around the world. For example, if some countries weren't imperialized, the ideas of railroads would not have been introduced to them and transportation wouldn't have been spread.I don't think imperialism could lead to opportunities for weaker nations because if a nation is weak, they wont be able to overcome the challenge of taking over a stronger nation or be able to fight back. On the other hand, it could be an helpful advantage because it helps the country be modernized but has the effect of loosing their culture and having no voice in government.

Skill Three I believe Imperialism can lead to greater issues. Once a country is imperialized, the nation in control of them can do what they want, as of changing culture, work, and government. As a result of these things the country imperialized can lash out and will not like being controlled, leading to wars and racism.
In my opinion, imperialism does help the world by allowing the country to develop in new ways and be introduced to a new life style. Even though it does go against the idea of being able to have an individual voice in government, in the long run it will create a better future for generations to come. |
