- Militarism, the glorification of war and the military, was one of the main causes of World War I. Military spending went up due to the new technology being created. The more one nation built up its army and navy, the more other nations felt they had to do the same. Another cause of the war was the alliances systems. The Triple Entente, or the Allied Powers, included Britain, Russia, France, and the United States. The Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The danger of these alliances is that if a member from one alliance declared war on a member from the other alliance, the conflict would quickly escalate. Moreover, Imperialism also contributed to World War One. There was competition and fighting for land in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. In addition the need for natural resources started to rise. Furthermore, Nationalism, pride in one's own nation and desire for independence also was a cause of the war. It was nationalism that inspired the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 1914, an event that led directly to the outbreak of World War I.
World War One lasted from 1914 to 1918. The war was mainly fought one the so called Western Front, located between Germany and France. An area in the war was called no mans land were Troops from one opposing side would run out of their trenches and try to run across, without getting shot down by the other troops on the opposing side. Usually, No one made it.
Some new technology that was brought to WWI was Machine guns and Chemical War Fare. These two things took the war to a whole new level because, with machine guns it was easy to target many soldiers with little, effort and chemicals were hard to see or had no odor. Victory was difficult for both teams because they were getting deseases, low on food and in bad conditions. |
In the beginning of the war The U.S. tried as along as possible to keep neutrality and stay out, but some things have eventually lead to joining in the last year of war.The United States decided to get involved in WWI because they would have economic opportunity, Germany was sinking U.S. ships and also bribed Mexico, by sending the Zimmerman Note. The letter stated they should become one of Germanys alliances just in case they go to war with The United States, and in return they will get some of their land back.
The United States changed the course of WWI because they helped the Allies team end the war sooner |
WWI finally ended in year 1918. By the end, 9 million soldiers were dead, and about 30 million civilians were effected by disease, injury, or starvation. There was over $338 billion of damages. The war is considered a four year stalemate.
On January 12, 1919 the victors of the war called "The Big Four" held a meeting in Paris to discuss what to do with Germany and the rest of Central powers. This meeting only included U.S., Britain, France, and Italy. Here is where Woodrow Wilson introduced his 14 points of how to keep peace between countries. The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty to officially end WWI. This treaty had a great impact in future conflicts because it treated Germany very harshly. Germany saw this as unfair treatment and despised the treaty. It also weakened their economy and military making citizens unhappy and caused rebellion. |
